General Information about Psychology

• Major professional and scholarly associations.
  • A good source of information about psychology is the Web site maintained by the American Psychological Association (APA). The information provided to students interested in psychology, and contact information for various specialty groups in psychology are very useful.

  • A second site of general interest is maintained by the Association for Psychological Science (APS). Though not as extensive or elaborate as the APA site, it provides access to a variety of psychology related resources.

• Psychology mega sites.
  • Psych Web.. Russell A. Dewey, PhD., Georgia Southern University introduces his site this way, "Welcome to Psych Web! This Web site contains lots of psychology-related information for students and teachers of psychology." This site is an excellent resource for students.

  • PsychREF: Resources in Psychology on the Internet.. Vincent W. Hevern, SJ, PhD, Le Moyne College, describes his site this way, "As currently envisaged, PsychREF(tm) focuses upon undergraduate psychology in all its aspects: for students in providing resources for research in psychology, academic skill development, and academic advisement issues such as graduate school or career planning; for psychology faculty who serve in the roles of classroom teacher, academic advisor, and researcher." This site is an award-winning resource for students.

• Psychology in the news
  • Monitor on Psychology. This is the on-line version of the monthly newsletter of the American Psychological Association. The Monitor reports on current issues in the science and practice of psychology. Along with a number feature articles each issue includes Newsline, Psychology and Society, Science, Practice, Public Interest, and Education sections. Previous issues (beginning with March 1995) are also available on line.

  • Observer. This is the on-line version of the monthly newsletter of the Association for Psychological Science.

  • The New York Times frequently publishes articles related to psychology. You can find some of them compiled under the following headings:
    • Psychology and psychologists.
    • Brain
    • Mental health and disorders
    Specific topics related to psychology (for example, Alzheimer's, Amnesia, Amphetamines, Anorexia Nervosa, Antidepressants, Anxiety, etc.) can be found at Diseases, Conditions, and Health Topics. Free registration may be required to gain access to this New York Times content.

  • PsychPORT. This site, a product of the American Psychological Association, provides quick access to mass-media information related to psychology. The emphasis is on recent news stories (past four to six weeks).

  • EurekAlert! This site is maintained by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It is promoted as, "Your global gateway to science and medical news". News releases announcing recent findings in science are indexed here. The news releases include a citation to the full article as well as direct e-mail contact with the senior author. All science news releases for the week can be scanned (Choose "This week's releases" from the main menu). Earlier science news releases (beginning with 1996) can be searched (Choose "Search" from the main menu). You can use keywords of your own choosing or use the drop-down menues to search hierarchically by topical keywords. You will probably want to begin with "Social and behavioral science" and then narrow your search with additional keyword choices. Once you have created your list of keywords, added it to the search window. You can also limit your search by date and type of news release.

  • ScienceDaily This is a free, advertising-supported site that makes available science news releases in fields ranging from astrophysics to zoology. This link will take you to the section featuring research in neuroscience, mental health and illness, psychology, and psychiatry. Each news release is posted in its original form, as it was submitted by the university or research organization, with a contact name and link to the organization's home page.

• Fun sites that test your general psychological knowledge or give you a good laugh.
  • Hang Man. Test your knowledge of what one researcher has identified as the most important 100 terms and concepts in psychology by playing Hang Man.

  • Crossword Puzzles. Test your knowledge of psychological terms and concepts by completing these thirteen crossword puzzles.

  • The Lighter Side of Psych. Jokes, lists, and quizzes about the humor in psychology, therapy, and research. A great site for procrastinating while waiting for inspiration to move you to work on a psychology paper or to study for a psychology test.

• PS 100. General Psychology
  • General Psychology, course syllabus This link will open Microsoft Word 97 and retrieve the document. Within Word you can print the document or save it to disk locally.

  • Readings. Reading list and readings only available to those with valid SNC Computer Services identification and password.

  • SNC Netstorage. Web-based access to PowerPoint presentation files for each class session. Valid SNC Computer Services identification and password required. Go to Drive G, korsst, PS 100, PS 100 Lectures. Drive G is also available directly through the campus network.

  • Forward Campus E-MailI communicate frequently with students using the campus e-mail system. If you have an established e-mail account with an off-campus provider, and you would like to eliminate the hassle of checking both your on- and off-campus e-mail, you can forward your on-campus e-mail to an off-campus e-mail address.

  • Atkinson and Hilgard's Introduction to Psychology (14th edition). Smith, Nolen-Hoeksema, Fredrickson and Loftus. Thompson/Wadsworth, the publisher of the text I use in General Psychology maintains a site that provides access to many resources of interest and value to students. You can test your understanding of the information presented in a chapter by completing a crossword puzzle, working your way through a flashcard deck, and taking pre and post test quizzes. These activities can help you identify the terms, concepts, and processes you understand well and also where you need to invest additional time and effort when studying.

  • Extra credit quizzes
    • Textbook quizzes
      • Select the appropriate chapter from the pull down menu.
      • Choose the Tutorial Quiz from the column on the left.
      • Choose to display all questions on a single page rather than one question at a time.
      • Answer each of the questions. Complete the questions on your own. Do not make use of any assistance from friends, classmates, readings, notes, or on-line helps.
      • Click the Submit button when you reach the end of the quiz.
      • If you have answered all the questions, choose to End the quiz and see the summary.
      • Review the quiz to identify items answered incorrectly and note the pages suggested for review.
      • If you have answered at least 80% of the items correctly enter my e-mail address (stuart.korshavn@snc.edu) and your own e-mail address (so you have a copy for your records) and send a record of your performance to me.
      • If you did not answer at least 80% of the items correctly, review the pages in the text related to the items you answered incorrectly, take the quiz again and submit your score if your performance meets the minimum requirement. You may take the quiz as often as necessary to earn the required score.
      
      
    • Educator quizzes.
      • Log in using your SNC ID and password.
      • Select PS 100 if more than one class is available to you.
      • Select Quizzes from the left-had column.
      • Select the appropriate chapter.
      • Complete the quiz. Complete the questions on your own. Do not make use of any assistance from friends, classmates, readings, notes, or on-line helps.
      • You will receive extra credit if you complete a quiz for one chapter before we begin a new chapter in class and if you achieve a score of at least 80% correct (actually 79.92% because of a rounding error). You may retake a quiz as often as necessary to meet this criterion.
      • Your quiz performance will be reported to me automatically.
