I received my BS in Psychology from California Lutheran College. That college is very much like St. Norbert. About 2,000 students are enrolled. It is church affiliated. The liberal arts are emphasized. But, it is in Southern
C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a
(where it rains, sometimes), not North-East Wisconsin (where it snows, in April !). My experience as an undergraduate, particularly working closely with members of the faculty, prompted me to pursue an advanced degree so that I could return to the college classroom as a teacher.
A fellowship from the Danforth Foundation supported my graduate education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I earned my MA and PhD in social psychology. Ann Arbor is one of the great university towns. It has a State Street, like Madison, with much the same ambiance and character. As a social psychologist I am interested in how we think about other people (for example, how we form first impressions and how we are limited by our stereotypes), how we influence other people (for example, through pressures to conform, demands for obedience, and the exercise of leadership) and how we interact with other people (for example, relationships based on liking, on loving, on helping, and on hurting).
I joined the psychology faculty at St. Norbert in 1985. As a member of the psychology faculty I share responsibility for teaching General Psychology (PS100) and Basic Principles and Methods of Psychological Research (PS301) with my colleagues. I have special responsibility for teaching Social Psychology (PS321), Group Dynamics (PS325), Industrial and Organizational Psychology (PS221), and A History of Psychology (PS420).
