Palm LifeDrive Motorola RAZR V3c

bluetooth special interest group This web page shows how I dial phone numbers on my Motorola RAZR, using the contacts on my Palm LifeDrive. I open my RAZR, find a contact on my Palm LifeDrive, click the little double arrow icon (which lists all available phone numbers), click the number I want, and it automatically dials on my RAZR. If the number also happens to be in the contacts on my RAZR, it shows the name of the person it's calling.

I was able to get this working thanks mostly to a forum post at HowardForums. While that post refers to a Palm TX, I was able to adapt the instructions to work on my LifeDrive (they're almost identical). Be sure to read all the way through these instructions first, before starting.

The devices:

Pair up the devices:

Start by placing both devices side by side on your desk. While they don't need to be this close (Bluetooth has a range of 25-30 feet), it just makes it easy to go back and forth between the two, as the following steps must be performed in this order.

  1. on the LifeDrive, go into Prefs » Bluetooth
    • turn Bluetooth on by clicking "On"
    • click "Setup Devices" button
    • click "Phone Setup" button
    • click "Phone Connection" button
    • click "Next" button
    • select "Motorola" for the Manufacturer (do not select the Model yet)

  2. on the RAZR, go into Settings » Connection » Bluetooth Link » Setup
    • set the Name to whatever you want (i.e. Scott's phone); this is the name that will appear on the LifeDrive when it searches for nearby devices
    • click on Find Me
    • the little Bluetooth icon should start blinking at the top of the screen

  3. now, within 60 seconds, go back to the LifeDrive and select "Other" for the Model (don't select "V3")
    • click "Next" button
    • the LifeDrive should now start searching for your phone, and should find your Motorola RAZR by the name you entered
    • select your phone from the list and click "OK" button
    • read about the 4-digit passkey, decide what yours will be (i.e. 1234, digits only, no letters), click "Next" button
    • enter the passkey, click "OK" button
    • it will then say "Verifying passkey..."

  4. on the RAZR, it should say "Bond with...?"
    • select "Yes", then enter the passkey from above
    • it should now say "PIN verified and saved"

  5. the LifeDrive should now say "Phone connection setup was successful. You can now dial..."
    • click "Done" button
    • if it then asks if you want to set up your device to connect to the internet, answer "No"
    • click "Done" button in the Phone Setup screen
    • click "Done" button in the Bluetooth screen
Configure the connection on the LifeDrive:
  1. on the LifeDrive, go into Prefs » Connection
  2. select the connection that corresponds to the name of your phone
  3. click "Edit" button
  4. fill in the prompts as follows (much of these may already be set):
Name: any name (you can just leave it as it is)
    Connect to: Phone
    Via: Bluetooth
Device: your phone (should be in the list once paired)
    Model: Standard GSM
  5. click "Details" button
  6. fill in the prompts as follows:
    Speed: 115,200 bps
Init String: +Mode=2 (erase what's already there, and replace with this)
  7. click "OK" button
Test it:

On the LifeDrive, go into your contacts and select one. For testing, it helps if you have one that contains your office or home phone number. While the contact is displayed, look for the little Quick Connect icon (contains a double arrow) at the top of the screen, and click it. This should give you a list of all the phone numbers for this contact. Click and hold the number you wish to dial. The RAZR should receive the request and dial the number.
